Grant has ADOT studying climate change impact on state transportation

Nov. 20, 2013

A new grant will allow the Arizona Department of Transportation to collaborate with scientists including university faculty in order to asses the impact of climate change on public transportation. SNRE Assistant Professor and Assistant Extension Specialist Dr. Gregg Garfin was quoted in the KTAR article regarding the potential impact of climate change on transportation: "If we have increasing high temperatures at airports like Sky Harbor, aircraft can't get enough lift to take off and they only can be used at certain temperatures." The study is funded by a $125,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration and will study how extreme weather fueled by climate change could affect travel on Interstate 10, I-17 and I-19.
