Charles Hutchinson receives Martha Maiden award from the Federation of Earth Science Partners

Dr. Charles Hutchinson, Professor Emeritus and retired Director of SNRE, received the Martha Maiden Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to the Earth Science Information Community, bestowed by the Federaton of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) The award, named for Martha E. Maiden, NASA Program Executive for Earth Data Systems, honors individuals who have demonstrated leadership, dedication and a collaborative spirit in advancing the field of Earth Science information. Dr. Hutchinson has worked across geographic scales and communities, focusing his efforts locally, regionally and internationally to address key human and environmental impacts of desertification. His career has charted a course from research to administration, working in the private sector, multiple national and international agencies and academia, advancing to professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson, serving NASA as Acting Director of the Applied Sciences Division and ultimately becoming the Director of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the UA before his retirement in 2012.
 
?The common thread through Dr. Hutchinson?s life?s work has been to build bridges across communities to connect data to decision making for public benefit,? said Karl Benedict, ESIP Federation President. ?It is this breadth of selfless service that defines this award.?
