Laura Lopez-Hoffman in Houston Chronicle: "Border security vs. environmental protection? It's a false choice"

Laura Lopez-Hoffman is the co-author of a recent article published in the Houston Chronicle, "Border security vs. environmental protection? It's a false choice." Along with her co-authors UA faculty members Elizabeth Baldwin and Kirk Emerson, Lopez-Hoffman argues that environmental protection and border security do not have to be mutually exclusive. In response to the news that the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol plans for forego an environmental impact study before walling off a large portion of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Texas, the authors point out the successful working relationship between Border Control agents and staff at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. According to the article, the partnership that these two agencies has created showcases an example of how law enforcement and those who seek to protect the environment can partner together in order to better meet their goals.
