AZCentral: "After costly Frye Fire, endangered squirrels may be nearing extinction"

Dec. 5, 2017

Several UA students and faculty, including Senior Wildlife Biologist Melissa Merrick and Associate Director Dr. John Koprowski, were interviewed by AZCentral for a feature article regarding the future of the endangered Mt. Graham red squirrels. After the Frye Fire devastated their habitat, the small population of squirrels has dwindled to an estimated 35 individuals and is now at severe risk of extinction due to the stresses of winter and predation. The dedicated employees of the Koprowski Conservation Research Lab as well as the Phoenix Zoo Conservation Director Stuart Wells continue to work together to conserve this valuable endangered species from extinction.
